He began freelance writing in 1997 in the field of boxing journalism, and soon ventured into reviewing books, and his hobby soon become a regularly-paying gig by 2007. Writing is now the larger of Rich Thomas‘s two part-time jobs, and he works as a Travel Editor for two websites. Rich lives in Lisbon, Portugal with his wife, and is busy teaching English, working on a novel, learning Portuguese, and entertaining his two dogs – and still manages to squeeze in time for AC.

Here’s what this Source has to say about writing for Associated Content:

SK: How did you get started with writing for AC?
RT: I found it based on a recommendation from someone who was reading my blog. I wrote that I was experimenting with performance-based writing, and they suggested I look at AC.

SK: What inspired you to join?
RT: Compared to what I was doing back in the very early days of my current run as a freelancer, it offered the best deal: a combination of flat-fee and performance payments.

SK:  Your favorite content category to browse at work:
RT: I was the test subject in Travel for the Category Editor program, which I suppose makes me the “Senior Travel Editor.” Therefore, I spend the most time ferretting out travel articles for featuring, and looking for good authors who need pointers and encouragement.

Who in the World is Fabiola Hernandez?

In Uncategorized on March 10, 2008 at 6:00 am

tinypic.jpgShe’s one of the younger writers of the CP crew, a talented contributor who enjoys reading and writing about travel, current events, movies, and a number of lifestyle topics as she looks forward to building her college career.

Fabiola Hernandez is commonly mistaken for a 13-year-old with her youthful looks and ways, but she’s an 18-year old high school senior who plans to make her way to the University of Florida this Fall. She was born in Venezuela and speaks fluent Spanish, but managed to share some thoughts in well-written English for a quick Q&A so we can all learn who Fabiola Hernandez really is:

S: What first got you interested in writing for AC?

F: I believe I Googled “journalism jobs online” or something along those lines, and the link to AC popped up! At first I though it was too good to be true; until I received my first payment. Ever since then, we’ve been inseparable.

S: Your favorite content category to browse at work:

F: Education and Travel are my top two categories. I love reading up on tips on school (How nerdy does that sound?) and all the different places people have travelled to and their experiences there.

S: Do you write for other online sites or publications, or are you an ‘AC lifer’?

F: At first, I tried to write for Helium, but it was not profitable at all. I also recently tried Brijit, and that did not work out too well. So I guess that I am an ‘AC lifer’.

S: What is your most popular article, and your inspiration for writing it?

F: It has to be the Top 5 Most Dangerous Countries in the World with 33,538 hits to date. I wrote it because I realized there was not a compilation like it or similar it to AC. One day I was just skimming this chart at NationMaster.com which showed the most dangerous countries and why (crime, rape, etc) and decided to research each one a little more in depth. And voila! I created my most controversial article…

S: Another CP’s article that has really inspired you?

F: Actually, all of Expat_2003’s articles are inspirational. He is an American expat living in Mexico writing so eloquently about how life is there. He opens the door on the border and let’s us see an insider’s view. I love his writing style and personality! But if I had to choose my favorite article of his, it would have to be “What is a Real Friend?”

S: Three CPs who you think deserve a mention and why:

F: Well, first of all, my younger sister, Melanie Hernandez because she has not had much exposure, but really enjoys writing for AC. Expat_2003 for the aforementioned reasons in the previous question; and Jeremy Still for the smooth way he writes and his groundbreaking ideas.

S: Name a website you visit at least once per day:

F: Besides AC? BBC News International — to catch up on my news, uncensored and unbiased.

S: One reason why everyone who’s anyone should read your work?

F: If they want fresh ideas that go against what is expected. I basically slammed the country of Portugal in one of my articles and have gained many “haters” from that. *sigh* But I also had tons of people agree with me and brought up many questions to the table. Go figure.

S: Your favorite form of caffeine?

F: Great question! Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccino in a bottle.

S: A favorite hobby when you’re not writing for AC?

F: Either listening to trance music or watching the Travel Channel.

S: One pearl of wisdom for any AC Content Producer?

F: Be yourself — make up your own words if you have to! But try to get into the reader’s perspective. Throw punch lines. Have witty beginnings and endings. And throughout your article to keep your reader’s attention, ask a lot of questions. And my best advice of all: write about something controversial, people love that.

S: Your favorite quote about writing or otherwise?

F: “I try to leave out the parts that people skip.” ~Elmore Leonard
